Transcript of Telephone Conversation between Charles Balis, M.D. and Ms. Sylvia Bows, Wednesday, August 7, 1996 at 6:05 PM.

Dr. Balis: Hello?
Ms. Bows: Hello, Doctor. This is Sylvia. I'm glad I caught you at the office. How are you this evening?
Dr. Balis: I'm doing well, thank you. What can I do for you? Are you feeling all right?
Ms. Bows: Oh, the life of a doctor. Every time the telephone rings and it's your patient--the worries that must go through your mind.
Dr. Balis: I don't mind. I like what I do.
Ms. Bows: Well, my call isn't for Dr. Balis, the psychiatrist, but for Charles Balis--an interesting, engaging, and very intelligent man. I'm calling to invite you to a party. You hear the announcement today?
Dr. Balis: What announcement?
Ms. Bows: It seems that some scientists were studying a meteor and they might have discovered life on Mars, or at least life four and a half billion years ago.
Dr. Balis: Yes. I heard the press conference this morning. I think it's wonderful.
Ms. Bows: Yes. I think it's great too. Well in honor of this momentous occasion, Rene and I are throwing a party. You are invited. And of course you can bring your favorite Martian.
Dr. Balis: That's very kind of you, but...
Ms. Bows: The party will be at seven o'clock on Saturday at my house. You have my address?
Dr. Balis: Yes, I do. But Sylvia, as kind as it is to think of me, I'm not sure it is a good idea for me to come. I'm your doctor and that would put me in an awkward position as your guest at a social gathering. I just don't think it would be appropriate for me to go.
Ms. Bows: Please, Charles, stop being a doctor for one evening. You are new to the Bay Area and you might enjoy meeting the locals. I promise not to consider your coming as a lack of doctor-patient respect or as a breaking of the bond that the therapy sessions created between us. Please, I would like for you to come.
Dr. Balis: I'll think about, Sylvia.
Ms. Bows: Good. Have a nice evening, Doctor. I'll hope to see you on Saturday.
Dr. Balis: It's really very kind of you to think of me. Goodbye, Sylvia.
