Dr. Balis:
Hello.
Ms. Ulreich:
Hi, Doctor Balis.
Dr. Balis:
Who is this?
Ms. Ulreich:
This is Nicole Ulreich.
Dr. Balis:
Hello, Nicole. How are you feeling? Any better?
Ms. Ulreich:
Not really, I was just calling because I have nothing better to do and you're a good listener--so why not bother you? Huh?
Dr. Balis:
We have an appointment in half an hour. Are you coming this week?
Ms. Ulreich:
No, my doctor said that I wouldn't be able to get out of bed for another week.
Dr. Balis:
What about your cheerleading and student government?
Ms. Ulreich:
Well, I won in my race and so did my boyfriend.
Dr. Balis:
What about your other friends?
Ms. Ulreich:
One dropped out, and the other lost because she was running against a girl who bought most of the football team's votes by flashing them.
Dr. Balis:
Really?
Ms. Ulreich:
No. She was just really nice and responsible.
Dr. Balis:
I see.
Ms. Ulreich:
So, mono is just awful!
Dr. Balis:
How so?
Ms. Ulreich:
Well, I can't see my friends or kiss my boyfriend. I can't go out to the movies. All I can do is roam around the house, watch movies, and do homework. I can talk on the phone sometimes and get on a computer once a day for 3 hours, but that's it. It really sucks having mono. I wish I could be back to normal. I miss having fun.
Dr. Balis:
Hmm. How's Angela?
Ms. Ulreich:
Fine, I guess. Her grandmother told me that I was not allowed to be near Angie ever again.
Dr. Balis:
Why?
Ms. Ulreich:
Well, Angie's grandmother thinks I was the one who started Angie on drugs.
Dr. Balis:
Wasn't it Angie who got you into drugs?
Ms. Ulreich:
Yes! Either she has been lying to her grandmother, or her grandmother just wants to blame me for Angie's problems.
Dr. Balis:
I see.
Ms. Ulreich:
And when I call Angie, her nurses tell her grandmother and she calls and tells me off. Once, she called me a stupid little slut who only wanted to drag her innocent granddaughter into my drug ring. And that was actually one of the nicer things she said to me.
Dr. Balis:
Have you tried telling Angie's grandmother that you've stopped using drugs?
Ms. Ulreich:
Yeah, but she doesn't care. She thinks "once a drug user always a drug user."
Dr. Balis:
And what do you think?
Ms. Ulreich:
People change.
Dr. Balis:
Hmm. Do they always change?
Ms. Ulreich:
No.
Dr. Balis:
Do you think your stepfather has changed?
Ms. Ulreich:
Which one?
Dr. Balis:
The first one.
Ms. Ulreich:
No. He'll never change. He's on his fifth wife.
Dr. Balis:
Which wife was your mom?
Ms. Ulreich:
His second.
Dr. Balis:
Did he abuse all of the kids he lived with?
Ms. Ulreich:
Yeah. I still talk to his daughter, Kerri. She was the one who told me that he has moved on to the fifth one--fifth wife, I mean.
Dr. Balis:
Did he abuse Kerri?
Ms. Ulreich:
Yes.
Dr. Balis:
Does she still talk to him?
Ms. Ulreich:
Sometimes.
Dr. Balis:
How old is Kerri?
Ms. Ulreich:
Seventeen. She still spends summers with him.
Dr. Balis:
Does he still abuse her?
Ms. Ulreich:
Yes. Physically and sexually. She told her mom, but her mother didn't believe her.
Dr. Balis:
I see.
Ms. Ulreich:
Her mom is not a nice person. I don't understand how Kerri puts up with her.
Dr. Balis:
Why?
Ms. Ulreich:
Her mom is a prostitute, or at least she was when I met her. I can't understand how Kerri could be so normal when her family is the way it is.
Dr. Balis:
Hmm.
Ms. Ulreich:
So nothing is really going on in my life.
Dr. Balis:
How is your relationship with your boyfriend progressing?
Ms. Ulreich:
Wonderful. He's so nice to me. He listens to me. He would never hurt me, like all my other boyfriends had. Okay. I got to go now.
Dr. Balis:
All right. It was nice talking with you, Nicole. I hope you feel better soon. Call me when you are ready to set up an appointment.
Ms. Ulreich:
Okay. Goodbye, Doctor Balis.
Dr. Balis:
Goodbye, Nicole.
