Dr. Balis:
Hello, Anna. You look much better.
Ms. Green:
Well thank you, Doctor.
Dr. Balis:
So, how is it going?
Ms. Green:
Life has its moments, although I seem to be getting my thrills through Kathy lately.
Dr. Balis:
You sound angry. What do you mean?
Ms. Green:
Well, as you expected, Kathy is still living with me. But it won't last long. I'm getting very fed up.
Dr. Balis:
Go on.
Ms. Green:
Okay. Kathy couldn't get her job at the bookstore back. Apparently, she had a bad falling out with the owner, and now he doesn't want anything to do with her. It's really stupid, because Kathy did add a lot of value to that place. She has the right expertise and disposition to run it, as opposed to the dodo who's there now.
Dr. Balis:
I remember you didn't like him.
Ms. Green:
He was fine, just clueless. I bet he got the job by fucking the owner or something, but whatever.
Dr. Balis:
Yes, please move on.
Ms. Green:
It's also Kathy's fault. There was no need to burn that bridge. She liked that job and she desperately needs it at the moment, I might add.
Dr. Balis:
Do you know what happened?
Ms. Green:
No, and Kathy refuses to talk about it. So she did some very stupid shit.
Dr. Balis:
Like what?
Ms. Green:
She did a couple of live S&M acts. And now, she's talking about starting a dominatrix practice. It's very dangerous.
Dr. Balis:
What is she talking about?
Ms. Green:
She wants to be an alternative sex therapist, of sorts. She said that's what she is really qualified to do and she has all the necessary accouterments. She wants to set up a business where she'll be offering her services as an S&M top. She wants to be a dominatrix for money.
Dr. Balis:
I see.
Ms. Green:
No, it's worse than you think. She wants to go around to people's houses, by herself, and beat them.
Dr. Balis:
Is sex going to be part of the services she offers to her clients?
Ms. Green:
God! No, I don't think so. Kathy said that these people just want to be abused, not fucked. And even though there's clearly a sexual component to this, she said that she's not interested in doing anything involving actual penetration. Wait, that's not exactly right. She said that she might do some body piercings, but most clients prefer not to have any tell-tale marks on their body after the encounter is over. That wouldn't be seemly for a VP of Bank of America, for instance.
Dr. Balis:
How does Kathy know so much about this business?
Ms. Green:
Do you mean has she done this before?
Dr. Balis:
Has she?
Ms. Green:
Hmm. I think she might have. She's not saying. I think she might have worked in one of those prostitute house things...
Dr. Balis:
Brothels.
Ms. Green:
Brothels. I think she might have been underage at the time, too. But that's history. But at least then, she wasn't doing it all alone. There were people around who could have helped her if a customer went bezerk or something. Now, she's talking about going to people's homes by herself. She said, since she'll be the top, she won't have to worry about being attacked--that's not how it works. But I think it's insane. Anything can happen. Kathy's a small woman. And even brandishing a whip, she doesn't present a formidable target. Things could easily get out of control.
Dr. Balis:
I think you're right. What Kathy is talking about doing is very dangerous. But remember, you are trying to disengage. You are trying not to get involved in her life. You are not her keeper. You can advise her and tell her how you feel, but you can't stop her. Right?
Ms. Green:
I know. She said that with the kind of money she'll be making, she'd be able to get a place to live and maybe even an education. After all, it's an evening job, and she could easily take classes at City College in the mornings. She keeps saying that she wouldn't do it for a long time.
Dr. Balis:
Doing something dangerous for a short time doesn't make it...
Ms. Green:
No, but it does reduce the chances of something bad happening, Doctor. But I still think it's a bad idea. I think she should go back to her family and make good. I bet they'd be thrilled to support her if she went back to school.
Dr. Balis:
Did you tell Kathy that?
Ms. Green:
Sure. And do you know what she wants?
Dr. Balis:
What?
Ms. Green:
She wants me to do it with her!
Dr. Balis:
What?
Ms. Green:
I won't do it, of course. But she said that it would be a lot safer if we did it together. I wouldn't have to do much, just keep an eye on things and make sure that everything and everyone is safe. She wants me to be her safety net.
Dr. Balis:
Are you considering it?
Ms. Green:
No. I told you I won't do it. But she's saying that she needs the money or she won't be able to pay the deposit and first and last month's rent for her own place. It's like either I go with her into her dominatrix practice or she lives with me forever. Can you believe that? I got very mad at her. She's putting me into a terrible position. I told her that I would loan her the money she needs to move out, but she doesn't want to take it.
Dr. Balis:
Why not?
Ms. Green:
She said that she would worry that she might not pay me back and some other bullshit stuff like that. I told her that she could keep the money, I'd just give it to her as a gift. But she won't take it--she doesn't want to feel that obligated to me.
Dr. Balis:
So Kathy refuses to take your money, but she's comfortable living at your place?
Ms. Green:
And don't forget she's eating my food and a million other little things like gas, electricity, water, garbage, telephone, and all the other stupid stuff that she's using every day.
Dr. Balis:
I told you this would happen.
Ms. Green:
Don't even start, Doctor. I know. I remember.
Dr. Balis:
You're right. That was uncalled for. I'm sorry.
Ms. Green:
Thanks. But the fact still remains: Kathy has no money to move out! And get this, last Tuesday, when I came home from work, I noticed a man's jacket on a stool in the hallway. I went through the house and didn't see anything else. And then about half an hour later, the door to the dungeon opens and this guy I've never seen comes out followed by Kathy in full attire. She's been doing her little services in my dungeon! I was ready to kill her. I guess she didn't expect me home so early. But she didn't even cringe when she saw me. She just calmly ordered the guy to get out of the house. He practically crawled out on his hands and knees. He gave her two hundred bucks for her abusive services.
Dr. Balis:
And Kathy wasn't apologetic for using your house this way without your permission?
Ms. Green:
She was after the guy left. She said that she had to maintain her role while he was there. We had a hell of a screaming fight after that. I don't want to be involved in stuff like that. No one is supposed to know about the dungeon thing. She gave people my address! I can just see when the professor comes back and some idiot bottom knocks on his door expecting a beating. How can I ever explain that? Or what if something went wrong and the police got involved. God! She's so stupid. You just never do stuff like that at home.
Dr. Balis:
Has she done this more than once?
Ms. Green:
She said that was her first time. But who knows? She might have been doing this all along. I'm worried about leaving my house now, Doctor. I can't believe her when she says that it won't happen again.
Dr. Balis:
What are you planning to do?
Ms. Green:
I'm thinking of calling her Aunt Helen, although I don't really know what she can do. She can't drag her out of my house kicking and screaming, can she?
Dr. Balis:
I don't think so. But calling Helen might be a good idea. Are you only worried about Kathy using the dungeon or is there something else?
Ms. Green:
Do you mean like she might do damage to the house just to spite me or something?
Dr. Balis:
Would she do something like that?
Ms. Green:
No. That's not her style. If anything, the house has been a lot cleaner and more orderly since she's been living there. I don't think she'll do anything like that. And I don't believe she'd steal anything. But I can see her using the facilities to earn some money. She could easily rationalize her actions by thinking she's working towards moving out of there.
Dr. Balis:
Kathy is not paying for anything while she's living with you, right?
Ms. Green:
Right.
Dr. Balis:
And you said that she did some live acts and now the dominatrix services. It sounds like she might have some money. Don't you think?
Ms. Green:
Hmm.
Dr. Balis:
Do you think she's doing drugs?
Ms. Green:
She smokes pot.
Dr. Balis:
Anything else?
Ms. Green:
I've never seen her do anything else.
Dr. Balis:
But you don't know?
Ms. Green:
I guess not.
Dr. Balis:
I think you should ask Kathy how much money she has and insist on providing her with the difference that she needs to rent a place of her own.
Ms. Green:
I wonder how much money she does have. It was two hundred dollars for an hour of her services. I wonder...
Dr. Balis:
It's very hard to get rid of a person once they call your house their home. I have to say I'm very worried, Anna.
Ms. Green:
Yeah, me too. It's getting late, Doctor. I'd better be going. I'll see you next week.
Dr. Balis:
Good. Call me if you need some help.
Ms. Green:
What are you going to do, Doctor? Take her out for me?
Dr. Balis:
Just know that I'm available by telephone, Anna.
Ms. Green:
Okay. Goodbye, Doctor.
Dr. Balis:
Goodbye.
