Transcript of 65th Session between Charles Balis, M.D. and Ms. Anna Green, Thursday, December 18, 1997 at 4:00 pm.

Ms. Green: Hello, Doctor.
Dr. Balis: Hello, Anna. What happened to you last week?
Ms. Green: Here. This is what happened, Doctor. See?
Dr. Balis: Is this a Martin creation?
Ms. Green: Yes. It's supposed to be a portrait of Kathy.
Dr. Balis: Hmm. It has seen better days.
Ms. Green: Yeah, well...I came home early last Thursday and caught them doing this.
Dr. Balis: I see. Do you disapprove of Martin's drawing?
Ms. Green: Come on, Doctor, stop being so dense. Do you know how long it's been since Martin made a drawing for me? At least six months.
Dr. Balis: And has Martin ever made a drawing Kathy before?
Ms. Green: For all I know, Martin and Kathy could have had a six months long art fest.
Dr. Balis: Why does it bother you so much that Martin made a drawing for Kathy?
Ms. Green: I don't know...I do know. Martin used his art as a way of seducing me. And now Kathy is making him use his talents on her.
Dr. Balis: Making him?
Ms. Green: Martin has been too busy to make one for me...
Dr. Balis: I see.
Ms. Green: I know I sound bad, Doctor. But I feel like I'm in the middle of a battle.
Dr. Balis: For Martin?
Ms. Green: I know he loves me. And he knows how I feel.
Dr. Balis: Have you had a talk with Martin?
Ms. Green: Yes. I took him out for dinner, and we had a very long conversation about our future.
Dr. Balis: And?
Ms. Green: And we decided to get married next summer.
Dr. Balis: Hmm. Congratulations.
Ms. Green: Thanks.
Dr. Balis: You don't sound too happy.
Ms. Green: It's like I know that I won. And yet I feel like I have to keep fighting all the time. I don't want to worry about catching them any more.
Dr. Balis: Catching them having sex?
Ms. Green: What ever! I told Martin that it has to stop.
Dr. Balis: And what was Martin's response?
Ms. Green: He said that he's worried about Kathy.
Dr. Balis: Worried?
Ms. Green: Martin is afraid that she might do something to hurt herself. I told him that it's just her way of manipulating him, but he said that he doesn't want to take that chance.
Dr. Balis: I see. And you don't believe that Kathy would commit suicide, right?
Ms. Green: Of course not. She's not stupid. In fact, she's milking this for all it's worth.
Dr. Balis: What do you mean?
Ms. Green: Oh, she got upset a few more times and vomited all over. I think she's just like a kid--they can vomit at will, you know.
Dr. Balis: I've heard that. But do you really think she's faking this?
Ms. Green: Oh, please! "I just can't stand the way the refrigerator smells. It's making me nauseous. Could you please clean it for me, Martin?" She said that right in front of me, and she knew that I just cleaned the darn thing out the week before. If she doesn't like the way it smells, then she should do something about it.
Dr. Balis: I see.
Ms. Green: It's a bunch of things like that, Doctor. And I'm not just being super sensitive. She really is totally manipulative.
Dr. Balis: So how are you planning on letting her know about your wedding plans?
Ms. Green: By invitation?
Dr. Balis: Hmm.
Ms. Green: Yeah, wouldn't that be nice? No, we decided to tell her after the holidays.
Dr. Balis: Why are you waiting?
Ms. Green: Martin insisted. He said that people are at their most vulnerable at these times and we should try to be sensitive to that.
Dr. Balis: And how do you feel about that?
Ms. Green: I can wait the thirteen days.
Dr. Balis: And what about Christmas dinner?
Ms. Green: Oh, Martin came up with a good solution for that.
Dr. Balis: What's that?
Ms. Green: We'll have it over our house. We got a Christmas Tree last weekend, and now it's all nice and beautiful. We'll cook a turkey dinner and buy some nice desert. My parents will be happy to see Martin and I so very domestic together. So it'll be good.
Dr. Balis: And what about Kathy?
Ms. Green: She'll be there, too. But she's still our roommate, so my parents will expect her to be there. And this way, Martin and I can spend the Christmas Dinner with my parents as expected, and Martin doesn't have to feel guilty for abandoning that bitch over the holidays.
Dr. Balis: Are you worried about having your parents interact with Kathy?
Ms. Green: I'll talk to them beforehand and tell them that Kathy's been mentally unstable for the last few months and that we will get her to move out after the holidays. I'm even thinking of announcing to my parents that we're getting married, although Martin wants to wait until the situation with Kathy is resolved.
Dr. Balis: Wouldn't Kathy try to...
Ms. Green: Make a scene? I'm sure she's thinking about it. But my job is to talk to my parents, and Martin's job is to talk with Kathy. He knows how much is at stake. I think it'll be okay--I'll paint quite a picture of "psycho bitch from hell" for my parents, so that they'll be prepared for anything that she can dish out.
Dr. Balis: Hmm. Frankly, Anna, I'm worried that you might be dismissing Kathy's threats about suicide too easily. I think you need to get Kathy some help. Perhaps, Martin could suggest something to her.
Ms. Green: He told me that he's been trying.
Dr. Balis: And?
Ms. Green: "You are all I need."
Dr. Balis: Do you know if Kathy has a history of mental problems? Has she ever tried to commit suicide before?
Ms. Green: I don't know. She had a pretty outrageous past. I think I told you a bit about that.
Dr. Balis: You told me that Kathy performed masochistic acts in front of a live audience.
Ms. Green: Yeah, that's how she got branded. But I don't think she's really into death; she's just into talking about it.
Dr. Balis: Hmm.
Ms. Green: Look, Doctor, we've been very nice to her. Very nice. But it's over. It's time for her to move on to some other victims.
Dr. Balis: Victims?
Ms. Green: Oh, Martin is worried that she might not be able to find a place to live. Rents have gone way up, and she's doesn't make all that much. And, for some reason, he feels like he's responsible for making her give up her apartment. And so...
Dr. Balis: But she was having problems with her landlord.
Ms. Green: Exactly. If anybody was made to give up her apartment, it was me. I was paying five hundred bucks for my studio. And it was huge and in a very good part of town. Now, it's worth twice as much probably. And if Kathy wanted, I'm sure she could get her old place back.
Dr. Balis: Do you feel like you were forced into giving up your place and making this kind of commitment to Martin and Kathy?
Ms. Green: Well, a little. But there's no turning back now. What's done is done. And anyway, we're getting married soon.
Dr. Balis: Do you think you would be getting ready to marry Martin if this situation with Kathy hadn't developed?
Ms. Green: I don't think Kathy has much to do with Martin and me.
Dr. Balis: You don't?
Ms. Green: Well, I understand what you mean--the three way relationship and all. But I think we would be planning on getting married even if Kathy was never around. Although in some way, she is responsible for us getting together.
Dr. Balis: In what way?
Ms. Green: She was the one who helped me understand Martin and his needs and desires. Kathy was my S&M teacher, and for that--for how that helped forge my relationship with Martin--I'm grateful. Look, I better go now. Martin will be home soon, and I would like to get there before he does.
Dr. Balis: Are you worried about something?
Ms. Green: No. But I would like to be there anyway. Merry Christmas, Doctor Balis. I assume we will not see each other until after the New Year, right?
Dr. Balis: It's true that your next two regular sessions fall on the 25th of December and the first of the year. But I'd just like to remind you that if anything happens, I'm always available.
Ms. Green: That's nice. But what could go wrong? Don't answer that.
Dr. Balis: Goodbye, Anna.
Ms. Green: Goodbye, Doctor Balis.
