Sgt. Keefe:
Hello. Is this Dr. Charles Balis?
Dr. Balis:
Yes, who is this?
Sgt. Keefe:
I'm Sergeant Tracy Keefe from the San Francisco Police. I believe we've spoken before?
Dr. Balis:
Yes, about Joseph Mazurka. Has he done something else?
Sgt. Keefe:
We're trying to find that out.
Dr. Balis:
What do you mean?
Sgt. Keefe:
His wife and children seem to have disappeared. Did you know that?
Dr. Balis:
Um yes, I had heard something to that effect.
Sgt. Keefe:
Yes? From who?
Dr. Balis:
For one thing, I spoke with Carol Mazurka by telephone; it was about a month ago at least. She said she was thinking about leaving town.
Sgt. Keefe:
For one thing?
Dr. Balis:
Well yes, Joseph did mention that he couldn't locate her.
Sgt. Keefe:
You know he was under a restraining order, that he was legally forbidden to go anywhere near her?
Dr. Balis:
Yes. Look, if you want to find out anything about Joe, you should ask him. Anything he may have told me is, I'm sure you know, protected by doctor-patient privilege.
Sgt. Keefe:
Yes, you told me all about that last time we talked. The thing is, this woman and her kids have dropped off the face of the earth. He came in here trying to file kidnapping charges against her, you know that? But it seems like he's covering something up. We have a witness that saw him stalking her when he wasn't supposed to be around right? And when we tried to track her down, to see if she could be persuaded to nail this creep, we come up empty. Now we're pretty good at this sort of thing, we've got a lot of ways of finding people; that's our job. Her mother, none of her relations have heard a peep from her since the end of August. They're getting real worried. And we're getting more interested in this guy.
Dr. Balis:
Why are you telling all this to me? What do I have to do with it?
Sgt. Keefe:
You've been talking to him on a regular basis, right? We can't seem to find anybody else who has. He's been keeping to himself lately.
Dr. Balis:
Actually, he skipped his session today. He just didn't show up.
Sgt. Keefe:
Hmm. Well, we'd like to know what he's had to say during the sessions he didn't miss. You've got notes of those little talks haven't you? Well keep'em handy. We might need to have a look at them if this investigation heats up. Be looking for a cop with a subpoena, if you want to play it that way.
Dr. Balis:
You can't subpoena my notes. They are protected by doctor- patient confidentiality. You can't just go fishing through them looking for something to incriminate him.
Sgt. Keefe:
Well, I think we can find a judge that will give us a warrant, if we can make a good case for it. Or you could save us all some trouble and tell us a few things we need to know.
Dr. Balis:
Like what?
Sgt. Keefe:
Like did he kill his wife and kids?
Dr. Balis:
He certainly never said he did, if that's what you're looking for. And I really have no idea, okay? He gave the impression of someone who missed his family, that's all you'd find in my notes.
Sgt. Keefe:
Thanks for your help, Dr. Balis. That wasn't so hard, now was it?
Dr. Balis:
Is that all?
Sgt. Keefe:
We'll give you a call if there's anything else we need, okay?
Dr. Balis:
Goodbye then.
Sgt. Keefe:
Goodbye Doctor.
