Ms. Mazurka:
This is Carol Mazurka, you know, Joe's wife.
Is this Doctor Balis?
Dr. Balis:
Yes, it's good to talk to you. What can I do for you?
Ms. Mazurka:
He's been going to you for treatment over there, hasn't
he?
Dr. Balis:
Yes, we've had some sessions together. Did he talk to
you about coming to couples counseling?
Ms. Mazurka:
No, he didn't say anything about that. I'm calling because
he's been acting so strange lately, you know?
Dr. Balis:
Strange in what way?
Ms. Mazurka:
Have you been giving him some kind of drugs or something?
Dr. Balis:
Yes, I did prescribe an anti-depressant. Are you concerned
about something in particular?
Ms. Mazurka:
Well he always was kind of moody, you know? But the
last week or so you know he either seems really happy and nice--nicer than
he's been in a long time, really. But like every other night --not that
I see him a lot lately, he's always at the gym at night --but anyway, he
just gets weird, you know? Shouting and screaming, talking crazy--I
don't know what's gotten into him, you know?
Dr. Balis:
Um, does he seem excited, like happy, or anxious? Does
he seem to be afraid of something, or someone? Is he talking to himself?
Ms. Mazurka:
Yeah, that's right, uh huh. He's doing all that kind
of stuff. Maybe, you know, you should take him off that drug. I'm scared,
you know.
Dr. Balis:
I don't believe that the symptoms you've described could
be side effects of the drug that I prescribed, Mrs. Mazurka. Do you know
if he's been taking any other medications?
Ms. Mazurka:
Not that I know of, besides aspirins and stuff. But...well,
you know, he doesn't tell me much but I think he's been getting something
down at that gym he's always at lately. You know, a lot of those guys
take this stuff to make their muscles puff up and Joe, you know, he's getting
that look. It can't just be the exercise, you know?
Dr. Balis:
Anabolic steroids. Yes, they could account for
some of the effects you mentioned. They can be dangerous too. Is Joe there
right now? I'd really like to speak to him.
Ms. Mazurka:
Oh God, don't tell him you got that from me. Hey,
I've got to hang up now, you know? And he's not here. Bye.
